Tara Henry reads from “Abroad” by Katie Crouch at Stories on Stage on Oct. 24, 2014. Stories on Stage is hosting a Los Rios night on Sept. 30.

Sacramento’s monthly Stories on Stage event will be hosting a Los Rios night on Sept. 30, featuring four of the best works from each Los Rios college’s literary magazine.

Local actors Jessica Laskey and Angel Rodriguez will be reading fiction by Los Rios students from American River College, Cosumnes River College, Sacramento City College and Folsom Lake College, according to the Stories on Stage website.

ARC’s literary magazine, the American River Review (ARR), contributed work from writer and artist Rachel Gardner, who recently graduated with three Associate degrees and a publishing certificate.

ARR faculty adviser and ARC English professor Michael Spurgeon said that Stories on Stage asked for a copy of their most recent magazine, which was published Dec. 2015, and selected Gardner’s story for performance.

“Rachel has probably been published (in the Review) more times than anyone else,” said Spurgeon. “She’s had work in probably the last six issues.”

“She’s a very talented writer with a unique imagination,” said Spurgeon.

Writers from other schools include John Adkisson of SCC’s Susurrus, Bojana (Bonnie) Anglin of the Cosumnes River Journal and Molly Stuart of FLC’s the machine.

This is Stories on Stage’s first collaboration with the Los Rios colleges.

The event will be held at the Verge Center for the Arts on S Street in downtown Sacramento, and starts at 7:30 p.m.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and there is a suggested donation of $10, or $5 for students with ID. The donation includes admission, a raffle ticket and refreshments (excluding alcoholic beverages).
