“Demon Slayer” is one of the most well-loved anime series, making its film continuation among the most anticipated anime releases of the year. Since the show’s debut in 2019 its fandom has only grown, and with the most recent season being released in May 2024, it’s no understatement to say that this movie has been eagerly awaited by fans. With its release date of Sept 12, anime fans are now flooding the theaters to experience the battle on the big screen.
This new installation of the series is titled “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle,” as it follows the series’s main characters into an “Infinity Castle” for their biggest battle yet. As this movie serves as a continuation to the cliffhanger at the end of the last season, audiences cannot go into this movie blind. The series itself follows its main character, Tanjiro Kamado as well as his fellow demon-slaying friends in the Demon Slayer Corps as they fight for their purpose of protecting human life from the killings and wrongdoing of demons with one mission at a time. In this movie we follow Kamado and the rest of the demon-slaying corps, including their higher-ranked demon slayers named “Hashiras,” as they navigate the castle-themed lair of the demons in a mission to kill their leader and creator, a demon named Muzan Kibutsuji.
As the name may suggest, one of the most beloved aspects of this series and movie is the demon-slaying fight scenes that take place. As each demon slayer displays a different set of themed fighting skills revolving around swordsmanship, including sun breathing and thunder breathing, there is diversity both stylistically and visually in each fight scene. The in-depth curation of these fights is evident through the audience viewpoint as the angle seems to intentionally follow each slash dealt by the slayer, creating the stunning and immersive illusion as if the viewer is in the fight themselves. This movie perfectly displays these combat skills with curated fight scenes as the odds continuously shift leaving audience members on the edge of their seats with the sounds of gasps echoing in the theater at each strike. Because many in attendance are longtime fans of the series, the emotional stakes are even higher as they watch their favorite characters battle for their lives, with some even meeting their death.
However, there are just as many heartfelt scenes as there were fighting scenes. A predominant chunk of the movie consists of elaborate flashback scenes that portrays the backstories of both the demon slayers and the demons they fight. These flashbacks provide the affected characters with their reasonings and purpose for ending up where they are in the fight, with the overcoming of these visions ending in the character’s death or leading to the character evolving to a new version of themselves. Overwhelming themes of consuming grief, the human condition, the power of love persevering, the true meaning of inner weakness and the meaning of strength in its relation to the ability of knowing how to fight in a selfless state were prominent from these flashbacks.
All of these aspects work together to create a thrilling and intense portrayal of the beginning of this battle to defeat the demon Muzan. Some of the characters highlighted include Kamado and Giyu Tomioka who battle the demon Akaza, a returning character from the mugen train arc where he defeats their fellow comrade and beloved character Rengoku, and now faces the demon slayer duo who fight for the justice of their friend. Additionally, main characters such as Zenitsu Agatsuma and Shinobu Kochō each engage in solo fights against an upper-rank demon to avenge the injustices of their past loved ones.
The combination of intense fights and touching backstories creates an emotional whirlwind of a movie. The emotional grace given to both sides of the fighting teams forces people to rethink their opinions on the villains as well as providing depth to the main heroes people came to cheer for. Being able to see similar fights displayed in the show but at a more detailed level definitely makes the time taken to create these animations worth the wait. This detail was not only evident in the technique of the fight scenes, but even down to a flashback scene displaying the realistic nature of Kamado’s surroundings as snow falls around the audience’s focal point effectively keeping them immersed in the story. Overall, it is an action-packed watch that leaves its audience marveling at the fights they just witnessed and questioning the new information they’ve learned about the characters they’ve come to know.
As this movie is only the first installment of this impactful battle called the Infinity Castle Arc, it did not end in a total resolution but instead more heart-wrenching cliffhangers. The Infinity Castle Arc will be released as a trilogy, with the second movie said to be released in 2027 making the third movie release expected in 2029. Since this movie only portrays fights between a few demon slayers and their respective demons, many are still forced to wait at least two years to see their favorites fight in the next installments. As the movie’s run time is 155 minutes fans can be sure that each fight scene is given intricate detail, making the wait to see their favorite battles even more worth it. This demon slaying experience is now released in theaters and whether someone is a longtime fan or just discovering the series, these extravagant scenes are a must-see on the big screen.
