American River College’s homecoming week started off with the first planned Chalk the Walk event on Oct. 28. Decorating the pathway in front of the STEM building on ARC’s campus, are a myriad of chalk drawings and decorations to add color to students’ paths.
“It’s called ‘Chalk the Walk’ because we have a wellness walk that’s going on Thursday, and they will walk through here and see the chalk on the walk,” said Amanda Lewis, the administrative assistant in the president’s office.
According to Lewis, the pictures and supportive messages are being added both to liven up the campus and to involve the arts in different areas of the campus for homecoming.
“When you’re a kid, what’s the most universally accessible kind of art you can generally do? It’s chalk,” said Charlotte Krayembuhl, an instructional assistant with the art department.
Students and staff from ARC’s art department sat coloring and encouraging others to join them as they passed by. The event will be repeated Thursday morning at 9 a.m. in front of the library and student center.
The decorating continued until 11 a.m., with Bucky the Beaver joining them for the event in the last hour.
