The American River College library serves its students in a menagerie of ways, but as expansive as the support they can provide is, there are still some gaps. To help bridge those gaps, the ARC Library partners with the Sacramento Public Library to help get students connected to the full breadth of library resources available to them. On Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Sacramento Public Library staff will have a table set up outside the ARC Main Library to answer questions about library programs and help with library card registration.
“We serve our students while they’re here on campus,” ARC Librarian Sarah Layman said. “But we want to make sure they also get connected [to public library] services so that they get connected to all other resources they can access from the community.”
Offering a wide variety of services including everything from e-bike rentals and cake pans, to free state park passes, the Sacramento Public Library serves the community in a unique and impactful way, both online and across its 28 brick and mortar locations. The event, which is hosted twice a semester for the last several years, has had great success in expanding students’ awareness of services and resources offered by the Sacramento Public Library.
“They’re able to connect with a lot of visitors. We’ve gotten really good feedback, and that’s why we’ve had them back,” Layman said.
Students who are not able to stop to chat with the Sacramento Public Library staff on Oct. 7 will have another chance on Nov. 18 to ask questions about services, policies and other questions they may have about what it means to be a public library card holder. However these on campus events are far from the only opportunity students have to sign up. Students that are residents of Sacramento County (excluding Folsom) can also go to the Sac Library Website to sign up. Students can also go in person to their local Sacramento Public Library branch to acquire a card.
