The Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) awarded American River College’s newspaper publication, the Current, with three awards and one honorable mention. Even though the organization’s annual state conference was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, the awards were given out virtually on April 8. Usually, community colleges in California submit photos and articles from the previous year and the winners are announced at an award ceremony following the conference. JACC also hosts on-the-spot contests during the conference.

The editorial staff won General Excellence for the print edition. The Current also won for Online Photo Story/Essay in Multimedia, which was received by Ashley Hayes-Stone, the publication’s former photo and multimedia editor and current student worker.

The Current also took first place in newspaper writing and Patrick Hyun Wilson, former arts and culture editor for the Current, received an honorable mention for a feature story.
