Spring break has come and gone, and students are now enduring the last half of the semester. This is the time for everyone to blossom, but students are hit with anxiety and stress instead. Many may feel as if they are burning out as assignments, projects and exams start to pile up. It is important to make sure students are taking care of themselves and catering to the four “happy hormones” can help with that.
Students can follow the acronym DOSE to achieve the success they need for the rest of the semester. According to the Khiron Clinics, DOSE is simply dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins. If students indulge in activities that increase these hormones, studying and learning will not seem so hard anymore.
Dopamine is known as the brain’s reward hormone. Activities like shopping or eating a meal you are craving trigger a dopamine rush. However, there is a difference between cheap dopamine and real dopamine. Cheap dopamine, such as mindlessly scrolling on social media and drugs, do not satisfy the brain long enough. Real dopamine, such as accomplishing a goal no matter the size, can help students stay motivated for learning and studying. Therefore, something as simple as creating a schedule of your day can make a difference in achieving success.
Oxytocin is next, this hormone plays a huge role in creating social bonds and feelings of connection. It is dubbed “the love hormone.” Hanging out with your friends or being a part of a study group can trigger an oxytocin release which also helps improve your memory.
Serotonin is known as the natural mood booster. It is normal for humans to have mood swings to a certain extent. When serotonin is at normal levels, it is easier for students to focus more on studying. Taking a brisk walk, especially on a sunny day or meditating before studying can boost your mood, especially during a rough day.
Endorphin is considered the natural painkiller chemical of the brain. They mimic the actions of morphine. When endorphins are released, they reduce pain and stress, creating a more positive and focused mindset for students. Based on the famous quote, “laughter is the best medicine,” endorphins are released and even dopamine and serotonin levels are increased. Even eating dark chocolate can relieve stress.
It’s important for students to know to give themselves some grace. There are many things students are juggling and some may have the desire to be perfect. It’s okay to not be perfect. Someone may not get the score they wanted on a test, but they have accomplished so many other things. These next few weeks aren’t going to last long, so give yourself a pat on the back for all that you haTve done.
