The American River College baseball team lost the second of a three-game series against the Sierra College Wolverines 11-3, on March 6.
After playing their opponent close through four innings, disaster struck in the fifth and sixth innings and the Beavers could never recover.
Going into the game, the Beavers were looking for their first win in conference play after losing three games to San Joaquin Delta at the end of February and losing the first game of the Sierra series 4-0.
Through the first four innings of the game, neither team could crack the scoreboard. Beavers’ pitcher Nathan Gahn was able to contain the Wolverines offense, allowing just four hits and no runs.
In the fifth inning, hits started to pile up for the Wolverines with errors mounting for the Beavers. Sierra scored four runs before Gahn was pulled for righty Donny Supat. Supat did his best to clean up the inning, giving up one more run.
In a pinch to get on the scoreboard, the Beavers were not able to get a hit, leaving shortstop Bryce Sabatke on base after a walk to end the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, Sierra built on its momentum and immediately got players in great positions to score. After giving up another run, right-handed pitcher Eli Cambell came into the game. This did not change momentum enough though, as the Wolverines scored three more times.
After going through three pitchers and giving up nine runs in two innings, the Beavers were never able to come back and recover.
The bottom of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings saw the Beavers score one run each. Sierra’s defense mostly held strong, giving up just seven hits and three runs all game.
Offensively, ARC catcher Grant Fletcher had two hits on three at-bats and Beavers center fielder Dylan Westbrook cashed in two runs. Overall, the team could not connect bat to ball though, striking out over 11 times the course of the game.
