American River’s Theatre Department is known for its unique takes on various productions. In celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, ARC is putting on a production, based on her 1811 novel, “Sense & Sensibility.”
The things that will make this production so unique have yet to be divulged , and the cast seems all for it.
The production’s first showing will be on April 25 and its last will be on May 4. The production isn’t the first of its kind, with “Sense & Sensibility” having had multiple television and stage adaptations from the 1970s to 2010s.
The production is directed by Tracy Martin and written by Michelle Martin.
“More than 75 students are working incredibly hard to make the premiere of this show come to life,” Tracy Martin wrote in an email.
“Sense & Sensibility” takes place in the Regency Era of Britain from 1795 to 1837. It follows the Dashwood sisters in their quest to marry for love, wealth and status. Tracy Martin says ARC’s production will closely follow the novel and features costumes made by Gail Russel.
Many veteran actors of ARC Theatre have been cast such as Ophelia Baker who previously was cast in the earlier production of “Puffs.”
“It’s a little overwhelming but really exciting. Sometimes I look onstage and am surprised just how many people are out there,” Baker said. “This show is an original production, and it’s been cool to navigate script changes and new ideas while we’re in the process of rehearsing the show. By the time we open, it’ll be something no one’s ever seen before.”
The seven-day-long showing has a wide ensemble with Diana Holder as one of many helping with this production.
“The cast is truly one of a kind. We all get along so well and work together really well,” Holder said.
With such a classic being performed at ARC, those who are fans of Jane Austen or theatre in general can buy tickets here and join in on the romance, humor, passion and beauty.
